Men are always looking for natural explanations for supernatural phenomena. The human mind desires to explain everything that takes place in life in natural, comprehensible terms. When faced with events that cannot be understood in the realm of natural logic, many people either deny the event ever occurred, or say “there must be some rational explanation, we just don’t know what it is “

When they say this, they are simply denying the existence of supernatural or miraculous occurrences . A case in point: the Star of Bethlehem. Ever since the star the Wise Men followed to Mary and Joseph’s house in Bethlehem first appeared, men have posited natural explanations. They cite a supernova, or a conjunction of planets as the reason the star manifested, yet neither can be proven to have existed at the time of Jesus’ birth. Evidence suggests His birthday was most likely not December 25th. Since we don’t know the exact date of Jesus’ birth, then it is impossible to find records that can corroborate a natural explanation for the star.

FAITH IN GOD

According to scripture the Wise Men followed the star, “…,And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was.” (Matt 2:9) Although stars do appear to move in the night sky, the motion observed has more to do with the orbit and rotation of the earth than the motion of stars themselves. The Star of Bethlehem moved, stopped, and remained stationary over the home of Mary and Joseph. There is no natural explanation for this. The Star of Bethlehem was clearly a supernatural and miraculous event, placed in the heavens by God to herald Jesus’ birth.

As with many other explainable circumstances, some scoff at the existence of a “temporary” star. It boggles their minds that a God they cannot comprehend would do such a thing. 2 Cor 2:14 says “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”To embrace the supernatural existence of the star, and the virgin birth of Jesus, requires something many scientists and philosophers lack: Faith in God!
